About the Schengen visa for travellers from Uganda

The Schengen area covers twenty-nine European countries that have abolished border checks between them, including France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands and Switzerland. A single short-stay visa lets you travel throughout the area for up to ninety days in any one-hundred-and-eighty-day period.

The rule that catches most applicants out is which embassy to apply to. You must apply to the country that is your main destination, judged by where you will spend the most nights. If your stay is evenly split, you apply to the country you enter first. Applying to the wrong embassy is a straightforward way to have your application rejected without consideration.

The process

How our Schengen visa application assistance works

From your first question to your travel date, here is what our visa consultants in Kampala do at each step.

  1. 1

    Finding your main destination

    Same day

You apply to the country where you spend the most nights, or where you enter first if the nights are equal. We work this out from your plans before anything is booked.

  2. 2

    Itinerary, insurance and bookings

    1 to 2 weeks

We line up your day-by-day itinerary, accommodation and insurance so every document tells the same story.

  3. 3

    That country's application form

    1 to 2 days

Each Schengen state has its own form and checklist. We complete the right one with you and assemble the file in the order the centre expects.

  4. 4

    Appointment and fingerprints in Kampala

    Depends on appointments

You attend the centre that handles your main destination. Fingerprints taken in the last 59 months may be reused.

  5. 5

    Decision in about 15 days

    About 15 days

Embassies aim for fifteen calendar days, sometimes extended to 45. We check the dates and number of entries on your visa when it arrives.

Why Schengen visa applications from Uganda get refused

We would rather tell you this before you apply than after. These are the patterns we see most often, and what we do about each one.

1

The travel medical insurance fell short

Cover below €30,000, a policy that excludes a country on your route, or dates that do not cover the whole trip lead to refusal on its own.

How we help

We check every policy against the Schengen requirements, or arrange compliant cover.

2

The application went to the wrong embassy

Applying to a country that is not your main destination can lead to the application being rejected without consideration.

How we help

We confirm your main destination from your itinerary before you book the appointment.

3

The purpose and conditions of stay were not justified

This standard ground is used when the itinerary, accommodation and funds do not add up to the trip described.

How we help

We make the itinerary, bookings and funds agree with each other and with your form.

Ask on WhatsApp

Which embassy should I apply to for a Schengen visa?

You apply to the country where you will spend the most nights. If your time is split equally between countries, you apply to the one you will enter first. Applying to the wrong embassy is a common and entirely avoidable reason for rejection, so confirm your itinerary before you book anything.

How much does a Schengen visa cost from Uganda?

The standard visa fee is €90 for adults and €45 for children aged six to eleven. Children under six are exempt. The visa application centre handling your file charges a separate service fee, and travel medical insurance is an additional cost. Our assistance fee is quoted separately.

How long does a Schengen visa take?

Embassies aim to decide within fifteen calendar days of your appointment, though this can extend to thirty or even sixty days where additional checks are needed. Summer and December are busy. You can apply up to six months before you travel, and we recommend doing so at least a month ahead.

Do I need travel insurance for a Schengen visa?

Yes, and this one is not optional. You must hold travel medical insurance with at least €30,000 of cover, valid in all Schengen countries for the whole period of your stay, including repatriation. Applications are refused for inadequate insurance. We can arrange compliant cover.

How long can I stay in Europe on a Schengen visa?

A short-stay visa permits up to ninety days within any rolling one-hundred-and-eighty-day period across the whole Schengen area combined. The period is counted backwards from any given day, so it is worth tracking your days carefully if you travel to Europe frequently.

Can I visit several European countries on one Schengen visa?

Yes, provided your visa is issued for multiple entries or you remain within the area. That is the point of the Schengen system. You still apply through your main destination, and your itinerary should reflect the trip you actually intend to take.
